Because “Good is Not Good Enough”

Program for Optimal Wellness

The Program for Optimal Wellness (POW) slashes the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer for our members by substantial margins. We accomplish this by achieving optimal levels of critical health markers such as blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Our POW Program physicians are not content with average or even “good” levels for our patients. We are not satisfied until our patients are at optimal levels. When it comes to the health and wellness of our patients, the motto of the POW Program is “Good Is Not Good Enough!”

Numerous studies from peer-reviewed medical journals provide the scientific basis for the POW program. Well-designed, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving hundreds of thousands of participants have demonstrated that individuals with optimal (not merely good or acceptable) levels of cholesterol and blood pressure can reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke substantially. Lowering blood sugar and insulin levels into optimal ranges has been shown to slash the incidence of cancer.

Approximately 600,000 people in the United States die from heart attacks and an equal number die from cancer each year. This averages one death from cardiovascular disease and one death from cancer every minute. Physicians are increasingly skilled at saving victims of heart attacks and strokes, yet patients are often left with significant disability. Survival rates for the most common cancers have improved incrementally over the past half century, yet cancer treatments are often associated with unpleasant and lasting side effects. Few would argue that no matter how good our treatments have become, it is better to prevent disease in the first place rather than try to treat it after the fact.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world. The causes of heart disease and stroke are well known and include elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking and systemic inflammation. Public health authorities have established benchmark values to help physicians decide when to implement treatment. When cholesterol is over 200, blood pressure is higher than 140/90, or fasting blood sugar greater than 120, treatment is typically recommended. Values below these target levels are thought to be “good” or at least “good enough.” Yet, numerous, large studies published in mainstream medical literature have shown that far fewer heart attacks and strokes result when these numbers are at lower, optimal levels rather than levels that are merely “good enough.” According to the MRFIT Trial of 350,000 individuals, the risk for heart attack drops in half when cholesterol levels are at an optimal level of 150 rather than 200. In addition, the risk of stroke is 240 percent lower in women and is down 70 percent in men when blood pressure measures 120/80 rather than a “high normal” level of 135/85 (a level that few physicians choose to treat.) The POW Program will strive to help you achieve these optimal levels.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death, although in some population groups it has overtaken cardiovascular disease and is #1. Several risk factors for cancer are well known and proper lifestyle decisions can significantly lessen one’s risk of developing cancer. Yet there is one key difference between malignant and non-malignant cells that has long been understood, but too little attention is paid by mainstream oncologists. Normal cells can utilize all varieties of calories – carbohydrates, proteins and fats – to fuel their cellular needs. Cancer cells, on the other hand, are restricted and can only eat sugar or glucose to grow, multiply and spread throughout the body. Starving cells of sugar represents a unique opportunity for both preventing and treating cancer. The POW Program capitalizes on this idiosyncrasy.

How POW Works. The POW Program assists healthy individuals, typically 35 years of age or older, who are serious about remaining as healthy as possible. POW is designed for people who are serious about slashing their risks of the leading causes of death – heart disease, stroke and cancer – as much as possible. In addition to observing recognized healthful lifestyle choices such as smoking cessation, regular exercise, stress reduction, weight optimization, etc., all POW participants undergo regular health screenings of major cardiovascular and cancer risk factors (blood lipids, blood pressure and average blood sugar) and receive appropriate nutritional supplements and low doses of prescription medications as needed to optimize each of these measurements. The POW Program is an all-inclusive comprehensive concierge medicine program, and one low monthly fee includes regular, ongoing consultations with our team of specialty-trained physicians, all needed nutritional supplements, indicated prescription medications, all required lab testing and allows for additional consultations and discounts on all of our other services. Members of our POW program are assured an appointment within 3 business days of their request with one of our doctors. In addition, you will have direct communication with our R.N. and patient care coordinator who can help facilitate as needed communication with your doctor. We strive to make the POW program the best concierge medicine program for you.

Before being able to enroll in POW, you will receive a baseline evaluation with one of our Grossman Wellness Center practitioners. A careful medical history will be taken. A battery of blood tests and biomarkers will be completed. Based on your results, we will be able to determine if you are a candidate for The Program for Optimal Wellness. If so, you will be invited to join. Participation in POW provides you with access to a unique, concierge-type subscription-based program. POW membership is offered as a 4 month commitment. Our POW consultation is $275 and this includes the required laboratory testing.

Among the nations of the world, the United States is in 45th place for the average life expectancy of its citizens. Cardiovascular disease and cancer constitute our two leading causes of death and together are responsible for more than half of all deaths. If we could significantly reduce the impact of just these two conditions, it is very likely that a dramatic increase in life expectancy would result. The good news is that that we have the knowledge of how to do so and you can begin taking advantage of this information starting today!

The overarching principle of the Program for Optimal Wellness (POW) ™ is simply that “good is not good enough.” When it comes to matters of health or wellness, why settle for good when optimal is within easy reach?

What Is Included In Pow?

POW is offered as a package program where you pay a set fee each month. In return you are entitled to all of the benefits and concierge services associated with program membership. These include the following:

  • Laboratory testing. Every 4 months, you will have a battery of blood tests done to evaluate the key blood markers associated with cardiovascular risk and risk factors for cancer. Your blood can be drawn at our offices or at a blood drawing station close to your home or place of business.
  • POW office visits. Every four months at approximately one month after your blood tests are done, you will be scheduled for an office visit with one of our practitioners. These can be done in person in our Denver office or via phone or secure videoconference. The main focus of these visits will be to ensure that your lab values remain within optimal ranges. You will also be able to discuss any other health concerns that you would like.
  • Customized medications. After beginning your program and at each of your POW office visits, your supplement program will be carefully reviewed and your health status optimized. You will receive the appropriate prescription medications from our in-house pharmacy. These medications will be designed to optimize total and LDL cholesterol levels, blood pressure, platelet function, inflammation and blood sugar.
  • Nutritional supplement packs. POW participants will also receive POW packs as part of their program. These are packaged in an over wrap with convenient morning and evening sachets containing multiple vitamin/minerals, fish oil, additional vitamin D, ubiquinol (activated coenzyme Q 10), and, depending on your levels, the anti-aging hormones DHEA and melatonin.
  • No charge office visits to use at your discretion. All POW members are also entitled to two additional intermediate level office visits each year with one of our practitioners at no charge. You are free to utilize these visits to discuss any health-related matter of your choosing.
  • Ten percent across-the-board discount. POW members are afforded a 10% discount on all services offered at Grossman Wellness Center. This discount applies to additional office visits, intravenous therapies, aesthetic services, regenerative treatments, most nutritional supplements* from our dispensary, almost everything offered at Grossman Wellness Center. (* there are a few supplements that we cannot discount because of our vendor contract)
  • Discounted membership in Grossman Wellness hormone programs. Many patients subscribe to our men’s and women’s hormone programs, BAM (Best Aging Male) and WAP (Women Aging Perfectly). These programs are designed to optimize levels of youth-sustaining and anti-aging hormones such as testosterone, DHEA, estradiol, and progesterone. BAM and WAP operate in a similar fashion to POW and are subscription-based programs. They include regularly scheduled office visits, appropriate lab work and provision of most of the hormones you will need. Lab testing and office visits are done at the same time as your POW visits. POW members are entitled to add BAM or WAP for the deeply discounted fee of $100 per month.
  • POW is offered at the special low price of $230/month. Membership is available in 4 month commitment. Each 4 month interval includes an intermediate level office visit, program-specific lab work, prescription medications and nutritional supplements.

Insurance Reimbursement

Grossman Wellness Center is not set up to bill any insurance companies directly. This is a major reason that we are able to offer our services to you at such affordable rates. We will be happy to provide you with a “superbill” listing the services provided along with appropriate procedure and diagnosis codes. You may wish to submit these your insurance company for reimbursement to you directly and/or to have these charges applied to meeting your annual deductible. (Medicare/Medicaid patients cannot submit charges.)

We encourage you to schedule a visit now to determine if you are a candidate for our POW, BAM and WAP programs. Doing so will enable you to slash your risk of the major killers today as well as improving your energy and overall quality of life. Please call Grossman Wellness Center at (303)233-4247 or email info@ grossmanwellness.com. We look forward to working with you.
